FOOTPRINTS: Indian female athletes at Paris Olympics-2024

To grow as nation, the contribution of women holds a significant role. The brilliant success stories of Indian women leaving their footprints across the globe isn’t a hidden fact.

“You have to believe in yourself when no one else does”-said Serena Williams (former tennis player).

The legendary KARNAM MALLESHWARI, who won Bronze at SYDNEY OLYMPICS 2000, became the wind beneath the wings for all those women who were ready to fight all odds and claimed to be the best among the rest.

And so here they come again with enhanced vigor and vivacity, after burning a candle at both ends, breaking all the gender stereotypes on the road to Paris, with dreams aiming for ‘Gold’, all LOUD and CLEAR!

The Indian Contingent with total strength of 117-embarked its journey to the French Capital and is all decked up to bask in the glory. It might come across as a real astonishment that how Indian female athletes have carved their path as front liners in the recent past. The unprecedented achievement of incredible players likes PV Sindhu (Badminton) and Mirabai Chanu (Weightlifting) in 2020 Olympics is still not a forgotten story. A country where sports is still believed to be dominated by the men, these Olympic stars broke the glass ceiling and inspired many more women to show up and that is how this year’s Indian contingent constitutes for about 40% of female athletes which seems to be a quite promising share on the gender ratio statistics, all shining with their spirits as high as ever.

MANU BHAKAR, India’s most successful woman shooter has already brought laurels to the nation and got us ringing in the celebrations by winning two Bronze medals and thus becomes first Indian woman to win an Olympic shooting medal.

To grab the eyeballs of the world as a powerful emerging sports nation, we are looking forward to what other fabulous female participants of Olympics 2024 have to offer:

  • VINESH PHOGAT, the winner of Gold medal in the commonwealth games 2022, is a strong contender in wrestling.
  • ANTIM PANGHAL being the two-time junior world champion and a bronze medalist at the senior world, is all set to make her Olympic debut.
  • REETIKA, the reigning Under-23 champion can emerge victorious in the heavier weight categories.
  • ANSHU MALIK, commonwealth games silver medalist, and NISHA DAHIYA, an Asian championship Silver medalist are also in the list of promising female wrestlers making their Olympics debut.

Earning a medal for the country is a matter of immense pride irrespective of the gender, but it is equally important to recognize the massive rise in the female athletes shining at the Olympics-2024 and we have to make sure to never let that zeal slow down ever.

Great Icons like SAINA NEHWAL, MARY KOM and SAKSHI MALIK had great fire for winning in them and hence could write history engraved in gold and the entire nation celebrated with them. It is because of their commendable performances in the past years, that could ignite the young and hard working female athletes to DREAM and DARE the impossible.

“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams”, said Eleanor Roosevelt. We may encounter many defeats in the journey, but the aim to rise again must not be defeated!
